“The kind of Love that knows that the Love that is often the greatest benefit for the ones on the receiving end, is often the Love that is the hardest to give by those on the giving end.”
I’m about to be a first-time grandpa. I cannot wait to learn how that new role will change me.
When I “principaled,” this was one of the things I would often find myself having to do to council young parents into allowing their children to experience some of the difficult things in life (eg tough friendships, heartache, failure, conflict, etc); not to exit from their lives completely, but to stand back and encourage by giving them parental confidence that “they wil figure it out.” Every parental act of interference, to save their child a bit of temporary hardship, was a moment of growth lost forever.
I’m grateful for this lesson, Kert. The other day, someone asked me, “Should I let my daughter struggle?” A resounding yes. I want my kids’ lives to be easier than mine, but I understand the only way is for them to struggle and learn to stop battling and surrender. I can only foster the conditions for this to happen.
Beautiful! Often difficult as a grandparent but definitely important to remember and allow! 🦋

I love that quote! Being a grandparent has been my greatest joy! It will change you in wonderful ways!
If only all parents would read and act on this!

Your kids were lucky to have you as their dad, Kert.
I was more lucky they were who they were—they made being their dad incredibly easy.
So much wisdom here 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Your kindness is my greatest reward. Thank you Maia.
