A pet is family and anyone who does not get that has never truly loved one. I have had both experiences, having them removed suddenly or by the difficult choice and both are not easy. Keep those scars and hold them tight, Sammy is teaching you if you are listening, connecting the dots. Oxoxo
Well, I typed a long reply and it all disappeared. My thoughts are with you and your family. I know the loss of a beloved dog is heartbreaking. When I lost my German Shepherd, Zoey, it took a while but her lesson for me finally came. I love that Steve Jobs quote and had it on my old website.

I was listening to them like crazy on my tape cassette Walkman in 1983 in Honolulu and then they showed up for the final shows of their massive World Tour…they chose to end in Hawaii so they could vacation. They did a few shows. I went to the final one and they brought out a giant cake on stage to celebrate at the end. The girl I brought became my girlfriend that night. Good alchemy!
