It’s a shame that Wally doesn’t realize what a Trooper he is.

Every now and then, he and I will talk about “how hard this is. But you are doing it Dad; we are doing it together. That’s why you are here. So you aren’t alone now as you do this.” And we’ll sometimes even name the “this:” dying. It’s true: dying is hard work made all the more difficult when we place obstacles between us and that final reality. It takes courage to face dying “face to face;” to be in that liminal space with a full heart and clear eyes and to approach it with gentleness and reverence. It’s harder for Dad to “get there” right now since he’s never been a student of this kind of life learning—he was never Eldered to “get there.” He IS a trooper just as he is living each moment available to him now—and so we maximize the abundance found in the grace of each day. And we find many ways, still, to surface joy.
